Check bushfire appeals and their organisers to make sure your donations reach affected people, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned.

A number of unsubstantiated social media pages have reportedly been set up that appeal for donations. However, there are no guarantees that donations made through these pages will be directed to bushfire victims. If you wish to contribute money you should contact a legitimate charity as listed on the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) register.

The ACCC has issued a warning after reports of door knockers seeking cash donations to support those people affected by bushfires.

You should be aware that scammers could set up fake social media pages that look similar to fire services or other relevant organisations seeking your donation. If you do donate, make sure you deal with legitimate bodies by contacting them directly using their official contact details.

Make sure you ask street collectors or people knocking on your door seeking donations for their identification. If you have doubts, do not donate.

In addition, be wary of any unsolicited emails, particularly if they are asking for money. If you receive a suspicious email, do not respond, click links or open attachments.
